Sun Protection Factor (SPF) & UV Blocking

The SPF rating system is a measurement of the UV blocking potential of a system. It is typically used for the rating of sun tan lotions, protective creams, clothing and bathing apparel. Whilst it is concerned with the same hazardous portion of the UV spectrum it is not related to accelerated UV weathering of materials. Materials may still require assessment of their UV weathering properties even if they are designed to block UV for sunscreen purposes.

The equipment required to assess Sun Protection Factors (SPF) is different to that of UV weathering and hence Materials Technology are not able to offer SPF testing. However, we are able to recommend suppliers or other test houses.

If you remain confused about the differences between SPF and UV weathering call us to discuss in more detail.
